Dichondra spp.
Dichondra is native to Australia, but it has become a favorite among gardeners and landscapers in many parts of the world due to its low maintenance and lush appearance. Members of the morning glory family, they are very attractive and interesting additions in the garden. They have clusters of small, rounded or lily pad shaped foliage which are usually green or silver in colour. Dichondra normally blooms in the early summer, but their tiny flowers are not really significant.
One of the most distinctive features of Dichondra is its ability to spread out and create a dense, carpet-like effect on the ground. This makes it an excellent choice for filling in gaps between pavers. In warmer areas, these deer-resistant plants are used as ground cover or even lawn substitutes. Dichondra’s vigorous, low-growing, and spreading nature, make it the perfect trailing foliage in hanging baskets, mixed containers, and borders.
Dichondra is also known for its hardiness and tolerance to a wide range of growing conditions. It can thrive in both full sun and partial shade and is resistant to drought, heat, and cold. Good soil drainage and ample sunlight are key for optimal growth, along with even watering to prevent the soil from drying out.
Its unique appearance and easy-to-grow nature make Dichondra a standout choice for any garden or landscape design.
