(KAN-uh lil-ee )
Canna indica
Canna lilies are not related to any type of lily, but in fact, they belong to their own plant group. There are hundreds of canna cultivars varying in flower and foliage colour. The large, trumpet-shaped, showy flowers range from shades of cream and yellow to orange, pink, and red in colour. The lush, tropical foliage, resembling banana leaves, can be green, bronze or variegated. Depending upon the variety, cannas typically grow from 2 (61cm) to 6 feet (183cm) tall, and occasionally even taller.
Cannas, native to the Caribbean, Mexico, and South America, provide an lush and tropical backdrop in a sunny landscape or as a thriller/statement plant in a large container. They are low maintenance and easy to grow, thriving in hot, humid weather. In colder areas, canna lilies will die if left in the ground when freezing temperatures arrive. The first frost in late autumn is a sign that it’s time to lift the plants’ rhizomes and store them in a frost-free, indoor spot.
